Nouméa is the capital and largest city of the French special collectivity of New Caledonia. It is located on a peninsula in the south of New Caledonia’s main island, Grande Terre, and is home to most of the island’s European, Polynesian (Wallisian, Futunian, Tahitian), Indonesian and Vietnamese communities, as well as many Melanesian, Ni‑Vanuatu and Kanak people who work in one of the South Pacific’s most industrialised cities. The city sits on a protected deep‑water harbour that serves as New Caledonia’s main port. At the August 2014 census, the metropolitan area of Greater Nouméa (French: agglomération du Grand Nouméa) had 179,509 inhabitants, 99,926 of whom lived in the city (commune) of Nouméa itself. 66.8% of New Caledonia’s population live in Greater Nouméa, which includes the communes of Nouméa, Le Mont-Dore, Dumbéa and Païta.
